Radio Features
For a freelance project, I worked with Youth Today and Crosscut to produce a powerful radio story about Youth Homelessness in Washington state.
For years, I was a producer at 90.3FM KEXP in Seattle, Washington.
Here are a handful of my favorite pieces we’ve put to podcast:
Wake Up, Win Butler: A Roundtable
Sylvan Esso Trusts the Process (or “Randy and Sandy Get Weird”)
Artists & Their Abortions
Miki Ratsula and Their Nonbinary Love Songs
Yard Act Gets Cheeky with Elton John
The Beytable (Beyoncé Roundtable)
I also created a series for KEXP about parents in music called Apparently. Check out some of the episodes…
Sharon Van Etten Addresses Parent’s Guilt
The White Noise of Postpartum Depression
On Being the Dad He Never Had
A Dad Who Does Drag
Navigating Motherhood and a Toxic Music Industry
Taking a Baby on Tour
Here are other radio storytelling pieces…
Hozoji Mathison-Margolis Dives Deep
As a part of an episode about Indigenous people, this piece highlights Hozoji’s involvement in the Puyallup tribe as a geoduck eco-diver and a drummer in the band Helms Alee. This story is a part of KEXP’s “Day Job” series for Sound & Vision and first appeared on 90.3 KEXP Seattle.
Chong the Nomad Finds Her Beats
Alda moves through life to the beats she feels in her chest. Everything—from tapping on a glass to the noise a squeaky door makes—can turn into music for Chong the Nomad. This story is a part of KEXP’s “Day Job” series for Sound & Vision and first appeared on 90.3 KEXP Seattle.
Nothing Arrived
A personal story about a connection to a song that helped me process my miscarriage. This piece first appeared on 90.3 KEXP’s Sound & Vision.
A Friend and a Stranger
I rode with Caleb Anderson on their commute to work the night shift as an ER nurse at the VA hospital. On this ride, they also told me about their drag persona—Sister Nurse Joy—who teaches sex education around the community and online. This piece was a part of 91.3 KBCS’s “Unmute the Commute.”
King County Access
King County Metro’s Access paratransit service takes around 3,000 trips a day. It carries passengers who would otherwise be unable to ride public transit due to a disability. But some who ride paratransit believe that it could be improved and feel now is the time for change. I rode with Steve Marquardt on his commute to a community event to talk about the issues he faces. This piece was a part of 91.3 KBCS’s “Unmute the Commute.”
Other Side of the Closet
We found a Craigslist ad asking for help to dress—and live—as a woman. We talked to the person who posted that ad to see what that really meant. This was piece was produced in 24-hours as a par of KCRW’s 6th Annual Radio Race. It won the “Social Butterfly” award and aired on 89.9 KCRW in August 2018.
Mr. Marfa Shuffle
As a part of a 2017 Transom Traveling Workshop, I put together a radio piece about a local celebrity of sorts. This piece first aired on 93.5 Marfa Public Radio.
North Star Gone South
A story about where I came from or rather where I thought I came from.
